Giuliani: Kim Jong-un 'begged' for summit to take place

Image
Donald Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani has said North Korea's leader "begged" for their summit to be rescheduled after the US president cancelled it. But plans for the 12 June bilateral in Singapore were revived after a conciliatory response from Pyongyang. Mr Giuliani was speaking at an investment conference in Israel when he made the remark. The Wall Street Journal first reported that Mr Giuliani said: "Well, Kim Jong-un got back on his hands and knees and begged for it, which is exactly the position you want to put him in." PARIS: A graphic novel version of "The Diary of Anne Frank" by the creators of the Oscar-nominated film "Waltz with Bashir" will roll off the presses next month, its publishers said Monday. Writer-director Ari Folman and illustrator David Polonsky -- who made the acclaimed 2008 animated documentary about Israeli soldiers during the 1982 invasion of Lebanon -- are also making a film about Frank, to appear in 2019. The diary the German-born, Jewish teenager kept, while hiding in an Amsterdam attic in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands until her capture in 1944, is one of the most-read books in the world. Pakistan cricket hero aims to turn green tide to political tsunami

Image
ISLAMABAD: As Pakistan’s cricketing hero turned politician Imran Khan considers a run for prime minister, his party’s record in his home province – especially the success of a widely touted reforestation initiative – is raising speculation that he might turn green advances into political advantage. Pakistan is set to choose a new prime minister in elections due next year. Environmental issues remain far from the top of the list of concerns for most voters, despite worsening climate-related heat, drought, floods and other pressures. But the record of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, in his home province of Khyber Pukhtunkwa, is gradually bringing him a bigger national political profile – and new possibilities. After winning enough seats in 2013 to form a government in the province, in the country’s north, Khan’s party introduced a green growth initiative to tackle deforestation, build more small-scale hydroelectric projects and overhaul national parks. It has promised a Bill

Myanmar´s Suu Kyi scraps UN trip amid Rohingya crisis

Image
YANGON: Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi has scrapped plans to attend the United Nations General Assembly later this month, her spokesman said Wednesday, as the Nobel laureate faces intense global scrutiny over the Rohingya refugee crisis. "The state counsellor won´t attend the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly," said government spokesman Zaw Htay, using Suu Kyi´s formal title. The spokesman did not explain the decision but said the country´s Vice President Henry Van Thio would attend the summit, which runs through next week. The announcement comes after the UN human rights chief, Zeid Ra´ad Al Hussein, accused Myanmar of waging a "systematic attack" on Rohingya civilians and warned that "ethnic cleansing" seemed to be under way. The UN´s National Security Council also plans to meet Wednesday to discuss the crisis, which continues to deepen as the number of Rohingya refugees making it to Bangladesh soars to 370,000. They have fled violence that

BARCELONA: A mesmeric Lionel Messi scored twice as he inspired Barcelona to a 3-0 win over Juventus to get off to a flying start in Champions League Group D on Tuesday avenging last season’s quarter-final elimination by the Italian champions.

Image
Messi broke the deadlock on the stroke of halftime by playing a slick one-two off Luis Suarez and arrowing the ball beyond Gianluigi Buffon, finally getting the better of the veteran Italian in his fourth game against him. The Argentine was also the catalyst for the second goal, forcing Juve to scramble the ball off the line and allowing Ivan Rakitic to shoot into an empty net in the 56th minute and add to his strike against Juve in the 2015 final. But Messi was far from done. For his second and Barca’s third he received a pass from Andres Iniesta and ripped more holes in a depleted Juventus defence before lashing beyond a dejected Buffon, scoring his seventh goal in three games. Juventus, who were missing five key players including defensive warrior Giorgio Chiellini, looked a shadow of the team that beat Barca 3-0 on aggregate last season to reach the final, and have conceded seven goals in their last two games in the competition over two seasons. Like Barca, Juve arrived at the gam
